Adventure 1850 – Backyard Archeology
Traces of people who lived here over 100 years ago are in the ground all around us, and backyard archaeology helps us learn more about them! Archology is the study of human history through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts found there. If your child has an early interest in archaeology, this might be a perfect adventure for them. The Beith House was built in 1850 (175 years ago!) on the banks of the Fox River in downtown St. Charles. There are many very interesting things to find both outside and inside the original limestone home. Using tools like spades, hand rakes, and magnifying glasses, your child will search for evidence of early residents and their activities. We’ll also use a sketch pad and pencil to document what’s discovered.
This adventure is for kids entering 3 through 6 grades. The two-hour "history lesson” provides a hands-on opportunity for kids to step back in time and experience what life was like in the 1800s – doing what kids did on a summer day back then. Designed to encourage interest in our local history, kids will come home after their adventure with mementos and activities to continue learning on their own.
Please plan on sending a snack for your child to enjoy during break time.
