An afternoon of history and fun!
At the Durant House: Learn how families worked with wool, flax, and cotton to spin, weave, and stitch as they created textiles in the 1800s. Watch demonstrations like these: .
o Susan, with her flax and wool, will prepare the fibers and spin.
o Janet at the large loom will weave a rag rug.
o Jennifer, with nimble fingers and threads, will make lace.
o Pat and Trish create brooms from last year’s broomcorn harvest.
o Joshua will use wooden needles and demonstrate knitting.
o Rachael and James with crochet, cross-stitch, and wood-working tools.
o Rashada will demonstrate how to spin on the great wheel
Look at some of the important tools in the pioneer’s life and watch how they are used. - including yokes to haul full buckets of water. And, see if you can get the laundry clean using an old-fashion wringer washing machine. You’ll be sure get some exercise during your visit!
At the Sholes School: Learn the craft of paper-weaving and create your own artwork to take home. Hear how the one-room schoolhouse serviced the educational needs of the farming community. Use slate pencils to write and draw on old fashioned slate chalkboards.
