Spelling Bee at Sholes School

  • LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve (map)

The earliest known evidence of “spelling bees” dates back to 1850. Teachers used them to help motivate students to learn to properly spell words.  The friendly competition worked!

It’s time we host a spelling bee at the Sholes School!  We will use words from McGuffey’s Eclectic Spelling Book, first published in 1870.  This book has words not often used today—but that adds to the challenge.  If you love a little competition, register now to save your spot at www.ppfv.org/spellingbee.

Select your age group and sign up soon (spaces are limited). It will be a friendly competition with no prize or reward—just bragging rights!

The Durant House Museum will also be open !
